✦ SAME SWEETS. DIFFERENT BITE.

What are freeze-dried sweets?

Freeze-dried sweets are sweets that have had much of their moisture removed. Depending on the original sweet, the result can be light, crisp, puffy or airy, replacing a familiar chew with a different kind of bite.

01

Freeze

The product is frozen before drying begins.

02

Lower the pressure

In a vacuum chamber, controlled heat helps frozen water turn directly into vapour. This is called sublimation.

03

Discover the texture

With moisture removed, many sweets become crunchy and airy. The outcome varies with the sweet and its ingredients.

✦ FROM SPACE FOOD TO SWEET-SHOP CURIOSITY

What’s the NASA connection?

Freeze-drying existed before NASA’s space programme. NASA helped advance its use for astronaut food, where low weight, storage life and easy preparation mattered.

NASA’s research also helped make dried meals easier to rehydrate. In 1973, the visitor centre at Ames Research Center asked American Outdoor Products to create freeze-dried ice cream for visitors. The familiar “astronaut ice cream” was a visitor-centre treat; NASA notes that those ice cream sandwiches were not part of the astronaut diet.

The connection to sweets is the preservation technique — not an endorsement. Candy Works is not affiliated with NASA, and our sweets are not presented as astronaut food.

Freeze-dried sweets: quick answers

Do freeze-dried sweets taste different?

The flavour is recognisable, but the different texture can change how you experience it. Results vary: some sweets become crisp and crunchy, while others turn airy or puffy.

Are freeze-dried sweets the same as dehydrated sweets?

Both processes remove moisture. Freeze-drying uses freezing and reduced pressure to remove frozen water, while conventional dehydration generally dries food by evaporation. They can produce different textures.

How should I store my sweets?

Follow the storage instructions and best-before date on your pack. Keep the bag sealed between snacks and protect it from moisture to help preserve the crunch.

Are all freeze-dried sweets vegan or suitable for allergies?

Suitability depends on the original sweet and how it is handled. Check the specific product’s ingredients, allergen information and packaging before ordering. Freeze-drying does not remove allergens.
